Search is the most oversold discipline in marketing, not because it doesn’t work, but because the gap between what’s measurable and what’s mystical is wide enough to hide an entire industry billing for the mystical.
The three things that actually matter
Strip away the dashboards and SEO is three questions. Can search engines reach and read your pages? Do those pages answer something a real person is actually typing? And does anyone credible point to them? Crawlability, relevance, authority. Almost everything sold as ‘SEO’ is a proxy for one of those three, and most of it is a weak one.
If a tactic doesn’t obviously improve crawlability, relevance or authority, it’s decoration.
Where the real gains hide/
- Information architecture a human could navigate blindfolded, because that’s also what a crawler needs.
- One page per intent, not five thin pages competing with each other for the same phrase.
- Titles and headings written for the person first, then checked against the query, in that order.
- Internal links that treat your best pages as destinations, not afterthoughts.
- Page speed you can feel on a mid-range phone on a moving train.
titles: unique, < 60 chars, query near the front meta description: written, ~155 chars, never auto-generated headings: one H1, logical H2s, no skipped levels images: real alt text, compressed, correct dimensions links: descriptive anchors, no ‘click here’ sitemap + robots: present, accurate, blocking nothing alive core web vitals: green on mobile, measured not assumed
None of that is secret, that’s the point. It works precisely because it’s boring, durable and impossible to fake at scale. The agencies selling secrets are selling the one thing search has never rewarded.
